It was obvious how much Roger loved, valued and enjoyed Ellen and Seth but also obvious how much his previous marriage and subsequent unraveling and humiliation from it have shaped his fears of committment. The movie showed how he ultimately realized that just like the game of pinball, you do have some level of control in the outcome but you also have to take chances and risks to get the outcome you desire, along with gaining skills in whatever you desire.
